Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Systems are a critical part of a hospital’s power supply infrastructure. When coupled with Isolated Power Supply (IPS) Systems and back-up generators, they provide the operating room and other critical care areas with continuity of power in the event of a supply failure. IEC 60364-7-710 and HTM06-01 states that in the event of loss of power, all the medical locations where isolated power is installed (that is, “Group 2” and “Clinical Category 5” locations) require power to be resumed (for life supporting equipment) within a maximum of 0.5 seconds. It further states that “Certain microprocessor controlled equipment may require a no-break power supply”.

Usingour expertise and understanding of what is required to comply with evolving standards, Starkstrom can design and provide you with a fully integrated package of a UPS System feeding into an IPS System. The remote alarms for these systems can also be also be integrated as a single remote alarm displayed on the Theatre Control Panel, integrated with the Building Management System (BMS), allowing email alerts to be sent across the hospital network. There are many considerations for the optimal system design:

  • The site topology (and customer preference) may lend itself to either centralised, semi-centralised or a distributed UPS strategy
  • Size (kVA) of UPS System
  • Constraints and options for input power supply (3-phase or single phase) and output power supply (3-phase or single phase)
  • Resilience may be considered in the form of interleaved, parallel or modular UPS System
  • Redundancy may be considered in the form of parallel, cascade or modular UPS System
  • Autonomy (battery duration) should be driven by clinical needs. It could be different for operating rooms, ICU or interventional imaging suite

Suitable for hospital environments where space is limited. The CRT+500 tower series deliver up to 25% more usable power than other manufacturers thanks to a 0.9 Output Power factor. It comes complete with internal batteries as standard, eliminating theneed for external battery cabinets on standard run times minimising the footprint and therefore maximising floor space for other equipment. CRT+500 units can be connected in parallel as and when required. Three Phase UPS Solutions


Designed with power protection as the primary focus, all Borri UPS Three Phase Systems come with industry leading efficiency and are renowned internationally for their superior performance. These systems are ideal for larger and more critical applications including sophisticated data centres and emergency services. Three phase UPS systems can remain online without interruption whilst the technology they implement means they provide less than 3% harmonic distortion.

B8000FXS – “Online double conversion, 10kVA – 20kVA”

Slimline design ideal for server rooms and small to medium sized data centres. Borri B8000FXS has an almost negligible effect on the mains supply, providing less than 3% harmonic distortion. In normal mode the Borri B8000FXS is a true online double conversion UPS power supply. Alternatively, it can be configured and programmed to run as a frequency converter or in SOL (Smart OnLine) as a line interactive system which further reduces energy costs.

Typical applications include emergency services and data centres. The Borri B9000FXS UPS Systems are amongst the leading ultra high efficiency systems available today and are ideal for large data centres. The parallel control system tightly manages both active and reactive type loads, allowing for intelligent load/current sharing between each individual module. The Borri B9000FXS features smart online (SOL) mode which significantly reduces energy consumption as the load is fed primarily through the bypass line. With continuous monitoring the UPS switches to the inverter within 2mS should the control system experience any anomalies. This is perfect for achieving a reduced data centre PUE.

Small footprint, transformer free design ideal for small data centres and server rooms. The Ingenio is one of the most cost ad space efficient power protection solutions on the market. It boasts super efficiency and unbeatable power resilience. Achieving less than 3% input total harmonic distortion and 0.99% input power factor (PF), the Ingenio series has a negligible effect on the mains supply thanks to a combination of Isolated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) rectifier and digital signal processing (DSP) control.
