Theatre Control Panels (TCP), sometimes called Surgical Control Panels or Operating Room Control Panels, are the central focus for infrastructure controls as well as alarms and information required in an Operating Room. This focus has two main benefits; it allows the users to only have one familiar source of information and lets the facilities staff easily inspect and maintain several different subsystems, without disrupting the wall infection integrity.
Historically, these panels have been made from stainless steel. In 2005, Starkstrom developed the Electronic Touch Screen Membrane Theatre Control Panel (eTCP) to overcome some of the inherent inflexibility of stainless steel panels, reduce the possibility of hospital acquired infection (HAI) and bring a modern look and feel to the surgical room. This has now become the preferred theatre panel throughout many UK hospitals. Screen sizes can be specified according to your requirements but are typically available in 10", 17", 24" or 32"
Due to the range of sub-system suppliers, user requirements and preferences, each panel is designed and made specifically for the project. It may include ventilation controls and indication, medical gas and AGSS alarms, power supply alarms, operating lights and battery back-up controls, general lighting and “room in use” controls, laser interlocking systems, UCV controls, fire alarms, etc.
In addition to the eTCP, we also offer:
wTCP – membrane type panel using pushbuttons and indicators (rather than a touch screen) as its primary user interface behind an infection control friendly IP65 polyester membrane overlay.
sTCP - Stainless Steel Theatre Control Panel
hTCP - Hybrid Theatre Control Panel; an sTCP that can contain an IPS system, a PACS system, or even a Touch Screen
If you have a specific panel requirement, please call us to discuss the product options in more detail.
A hTCP is simply a term used by Starkstrom to classify any Theatre Control Panel which is “non-standard” or contains special functionality built into it, such as a PACS viewer, a Touch Screen Panel or an audiovisual (AV) section. We also have the ability to integrate an IPS system (transformer mounted separately) into the Theatre Control Panel should you require.
The wTCP panel is also a membrane type panel, but uses pushbuttons and indicators (rather than a touch screen) as its primary user interface behind an infection control friendly IP65 polyester membrane overlay.
Whilst the controls logic is fully programmable, the user interface must be designed and approved before manufacture can commence and therefore has a greatly reduced flexibility compared to the eTCP.
A major benefit of this panel is that of advanced infection control. A single unbroken smooth polyester overlay or ‘Lexan’ is used to cover the components mounted on the wTCP Fascia, allowing the surface to be ‘wiped clean’ without being hindered by recesses or other dirt traps.
The sTCP is the classic Theatre Control Panel. It is available in a range of stainless steel grades, but is usually supplied in 2mm thick grade 304L stainless steel with a polished grain finish. The panel can also be supplied in a white powder coated finish (or any other RAL colour that is specified) to match user preference or existing installations.
The panels are designed specifically for the range of equipment and controls required on the project.. This may result in sizes ranging from 1000mm high x 1000mm wide to 1200mm high x 2200mm wide and beyond. However a typical size is approximately 1200mm high by 1800mm wide.
The panel is usually supplied with front access, however, a rear access model is readily available should you need maintenance access from an external corridor. Other option include lead lining and acoustic lining.
The eTCP is the latest step in the evolution of the Theatre Control Panel. The eTCP has been designed to deliver new functionality and cutting edge design and styling for those who wish to have the latest in a Theatre Control Panel with intuitive graphical user interfaces.
The touch screen is software programmable and is designed to allow changes to its functionality at any point in its lifecycle. This means that a panel can be bought “off the shelf” and programmed up with the required functions / alarms once installed. This means that approval processes within the construction phase is greatly simplified and if an item is missed or modification is needed, the unit simply has to be re-programmed and this can be done either on-site or remotely. Furthermore, should there be any new updates or new equipment placed in a theatre at a later date, control of it can be incorporated in to the panel by simple re-programming.
Another major benefit of this panel is that of advanced infection control. A single unbroken smooth polyester overlay or ‘Lexan’ is used to cover the components mounted on the eTCP Fascia, allowing the surface to be ‘wiped clean’ without being hindered by recesses or other dirt traps.
