Operating room and critical care area specialist, Starkstrom, recently completed a major project with the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, involving the Trust’s hospitals at Watford and St Albans. The project, which encompassed the upgrading of 13 ORs, was part of a £16.2 million upgrade after the Trust successfully bid for special funds from the Department of Health.   It showcased Starkstrom’s ability to take a holistic view to projects, bringing both the skills and range of products necessary to complete such a demanding and comprehensive brief.

Despite its complexity, the project was completed successfully within a short time frame.  Work was also often restricted to short periods of time, as all the theatres involved were still operational – at Watford, work on four of the ORs had to take place during a three day window, as the ORs closed late on Friday and reopened at 6am on the following Thursday, allowing only three working days’ access for the team from Starkstrom.  This commitment to working in a flexible manner, in close liaison with hospital staff, was what made the project such a success – everyone involved in the project worked together, with teamwork and cooperation combining to make the installation programme achievable within considerable logistical and timing constraints.

As each theatre was completed, Starkstrom undertook training with the clinical teams, making sure everyone was comfortable with the new equipment and able to get the most out of it.  Support material was also provided, and future training days will be held as necessary.  This ongoing support and collaboration between Starkstrom and the hospital will ensure that the new ORs are used to their full potential, by staff that are comfortable with and confident in their new facilities.

Starkstrom updated eight ORs at Watford Hospital, and a further five at St Albans Hospital.  Of the eight Watford ORs, four received a complete refurbishment, including lights, pendants, theatre control panels, isolated power supplies (IPS) and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and illuminated warning signs.  Two were also equipped with the latest in digital technology for ORs - VisionOR from Starkstrom.  In these theatres, the seamless integration between products was carried out by Starkstrom’s audio-visual integration team, which has over 30 years’ collective experience.  All equipment was from Starkstrom’s S-equiP solution.
